TIPS for Effective Time Outs-
A Teaching Tool
(Part 2 of 2)
Reminder… time outs are not to shame or punish but to teach.
What if my child won’t stay in time out? The child can be put in a backup time-out area that he/she can’t leave, like a bedroom without fun toys, games, or electronics... Explain that he must stay and be calm for one minute before he is allowed to leave. Once he does, he returns to the time-out place where the time is restarted. This repeats if the child leaves again. Kids soon learn it’s better to stay until the time is up.
After the time out…when kids have finished time out, ask them to complete the task they failed to complete. This helps them learn that time-outs aren’t a way to escape.
After the time out… give them positive attention. Catch them being good and give specific praise. ie. “Good job keeping your hands and your feet to yourself.” “Nice job picking up your toys when I asked.”
